Geography is hardly an issue anymore; some of the best spas in the world have turned themselves into the oases of their respective cities, while others have become the palaces of their untamed surrounds. Size has also become irrelevant; there are those that play on their capacity to take in numerous guests and others that fl aunt their offer of solitude.
In this day and age, the definition of an ideal spa is far from clear-cut. It can be of any shape and size—from a grand expanse to a hole in the wall. It can also be found almost everywhere—from the inner sanctums of a city to the far-flung regions of a province. But one thing remains certain: to be one of the best in this industry, an establishment must have the ability to become a refuge for the mind, the body, and the soul.
“Holistic”—it is the one word hardly absent whenever a prime spa lists down its offering. And this explains why Pevonia Botanica has found itself in the shelves of the industry’s finest.
As one of the world’s leading spa care brands, Pevonia Botanica offers a complete line of products and treatments for the face and the body. Created by Dr. Sylvie Hennessy, the brand employs a workforce of elite biologists to ensure the efficacy and exclusiveness of its products. Harnessing advanced technology, it utilizes nature’s richest botanical and natural marine ingredients to provide an unsurpassed spa experience.
Pevonia was launched in 1991, and since then, it has evolved to offer over 150 specialized home care products and more than 100 professional in-spa treatments. Years have passed since its conception, but it has continued to uphold its commitment to provide unparalleled results for women and men of every age and ethnicity.
On the whole, Pevonia covers all its bases. And as showcased by this list of establishments in and out of Manila, the brand’s infl uence is more than enough to turn a spa into a refuge for the mind, the body, and the soul.

Blending nature and nurture with Aum Spa
Even with all its modernity, Cebu has not discarded its capacity to be the antithesis of Manila. It may have crowned itself with towers of cold steel and glass yet at the very heart of it is the warmth of the tropics. It may have busied itself with work and ambition, but it does not forget to savor life. Its city may soon come to rival Manila itself but its coast has not forgotten the Cebu untouched by man.
Cebu is the Philippines’ way of marrying the past and the future. It may be teeming with development but its natural beauty remains intact. Its growth is that of a holistic nature—something that the Aum Spa at the Crimson Resort and Spa understand quite well.
Nestled just 15 minutes away from the Mactan International Airport, the Crimson Resort and Spa is Cebu at its fi nest. Featuring world-class accommodations and facilities, the sprawling 6 hectare resort features 250 rooms and suites, and 40 villas with 38 plunge pools. Most importantly, the resort also houses Aum, which Agoda recently dubbed as one of the Top Eight Hotel Spas in the world.
Featuring balance, more than anything else, the 2,000 square meter Aum blends East and West, ancient and modern therapies, and new-age luxuries enveloped by the peaceful embrace of nature. With its 14 treatment rooms, state-of-the art amenities and its recent partnership with the world-renowned Pevonia Botanica, this spa is as contemporary as it gets. But with its Cebuano heritage greatly intact, it does not discard the merits of the past—not with nature in all its glory sprawling just outside its doors.

Spa at Holiday Inn & Suites Makati
Spa at Holiday Inn & Suites Makati is an easy-access getaway in the heart of Makati’s Ayala shopping district. It is located at the roof deck, near the gym. Don’t let the cozy reception fool you. The services and treatments using Pevonia products are out of this world!
The spa’s no-nonsense design is perfect for the person on the go who needs to be somewhere fast after the treatment, whether it is in Makati or the outskirts of Makati. I visited the spa before an appointment in Pasay City, and it took me about 20 minutes by cab from the hotel lobby to the World Trade Center area. No stress!
Pevonia Moor Mud Back Tension Relief Massage
I suffer from scoliosis but still have to carry a lot of weight every day. As part of pain management, I have a weekly hilot with a manang from Iloilo. The frequency of my back treatment from her has made me critical of back treatments, such that I can immediately tell if a therapist knows what she’s doing or not.
The Pevonia Moor Mud Back Tension Relief Massage at Holiday Inn and Suites Makati did not disappoint. It began with the application of Pevonia’s Moor mud on my back, followed by a wrap and the loving embrace of warm towels. It brought me back to the time I lay on a jade mat: warm, relaxing and sleep inducing. I could have stayed in that position all day!
When the Moor mud was washed off, it was followed by Holiday Inn’s signature massage that perfectly continued what the Moor mud started. My body pain was gone, and it stayed that way long into the night when I had to stand for six hours (yes, six!).
Pevonia Aromatherapy Water Lily Facial
I am a fan of all things moisturizing to the skin, especially the face, so I gave this treatment a try. This facial was like massage for the face: calming and repairing. Water lily, green tea and chamomile combined to hydrate my skin.
Best of all, my sensitive skin did not react to the products and the treatment. I loved the fact that it is anti-aging, too, perfect for my sun-exposed skin.-Isobel Etienne

The Spa Wellness, Shangri-La Mall
There has been much talk about the newly-opened East Wing of Shangri-La Mall in Mandaluyong City. Aside from opening premium clothing brands like Porsche Design and DC, and cafes like Wicked and Morelli’s Gelato, it is also home to one of the biggest branches of The Spa Wellness I have ever seen.
The Spa I had always known was the safari-inspired branch in Trinoma. I expected to see the same exotic design at 6/F Shangri-La East Wing, but was pleasantly surprised to see otherwise. The Spa Wellness’ new mall branch, home also to barre3 exercise studio and SKIN Dermatology & Laser Center, is minimal and concrete, but also chic and classy — perfect for the patrons who go to the mall.
The striking feature of this The Spa branch is the built-in steam bath and Jacuzzi in the treatment room I went to. Everything you need is all there. The walls are also thick enough so you won’t hear what goes on outside, and the secret doors (visit the branch to see what I mean) open and close without a sound. If you fall asleep, nothing will disturb you here.
Pevonia Light and Luminous Facial
I came to The Spa after vacationing in Boracay. My skin was severely sunburned and painful. When I was told that this facial lightens and hydrates the skin, I went for it.
This facial is also anti-aging. Some of its main ingredients are: Squalane (natural source of vitamins A and D), Tocopherol (anti-oxidant), Vitamin A (regenerating), Mandarin Orange Essential Oil (brightening), Hyaluronic Acid (moisture bonding) and lemon and peach (brightening). People who love fruits will enjoy this treatment, because of the scent of some of the ingredients that also satisfies the sense of taste.
Pevonia Re-Awakening Eye Mask
While the skin on my face was enjoying the effects of the Pevonia Light and Luminous Facial, my eyes enjoyed this simple eye treatment. I call it “simple” because it only uses a sheet mask that feels like it’s melting into the skin around your eyes, soothing them and smoothing the wrinkles out.
This mask contains Collagen Fiber that smoothes wrinkles and Gingko Biloba that de-stresses and decreases puffiness. It also reduces eye bags and dark circles around the eyes. My therapist placed it over my eyes using an ice cube — best experience ever.
Pevonia Tropical Rejuvenation
If tropical fruits are good for your tummy, they’re also good for your skin. What’s best is they relax you, too.
Skin that badly needs repair and rejuvenation will greatly benefit from this treatment. It begins with a full body scrub using the Pevonia Tropical Saltmousse Body Exfoliation that gently polishes your skin while removing impurities. The salt dissolves in foamy lather and leaves repairing extracts on your skin that are quickly absorbed. This immediately results in visibly lighter skin.
Next is a yogurt wrap that firms, brightens and fights aging. It is a combination of Mango and Passion Fruit extracts that invigorate and tone the skin. While this yogurt was being applied on my skin, it felt like I was back on the beach, only this time the effect on my skin was the opposite: nourishing instead of drying, repairing instead of damaging, lightening instead of darkening.-Isobel Etienne

Quan Spa, Marriott Hotel Manila
Named after a Chinese word which means “a source of pure water,” the aptly christened Quan Spa is located at the second fl oor of Marriott Hotel Manila (part of the Resorts World Manila complex), and can be accessed through the Health Club entrance.
Don’t be intimidated by the Sephora-like entrance to the Health Club and spa. Attendants are friendly and helpful. The brightness of the foyer is a contrast to the cool dimness that will greet you at the spa. This, along with the soothing quiet, will prepare you for quality time with yourself.
A spa regular who is used to organic spas with lots of bamboo, rocks and running water might take some time to adjust to Quan Spa’s concrete, minimalist design. The cleanliness of the place, from floor to ceiling, will grow on you. Its silence is relaxing, and the ambiance prepares you for a great hour or two of quiet.
I highly suggest that, before heading to this spa, advise your family, friends and co-workers that you will be offline for at least two hours. This way, you can truly enjoy the treatments, sit back and just relax — or sleep.
Pevonia Spa Foot Ritual
Our feet not only carry our weight and that of the things we carry; they also take us around, in whatever footwear we choose. This makes them deserving of some TLC (tender loving care), and the best way to do that is through this ritual.
The treatment puts all focus on your feet. You may choose to have it at Quan Spa’s Foot Lounge (P1,990) or in a private room (P2,200). You can also choose to have it with another treatment for (P1,570).
The treatment begins with a footbath and exfoliation. I remember how relaxation started creeping in when my spa therapist started rubbing my feet with aromatic sea salts meant to relieve stiffness and fatigue. It was followed by eucalyptus essential oil — a natural antiseptic — and pine essential oil that stimulates blood circulation.
My therapist, Irene, explained the benefits to me as she applied each ingredient to my feet, all the while rubbing and massaging them so I could better appreciate their effect. The black Moor mud wrap unique to Pevonia sealed the deal, and my feet (which are almost always painful) felt relaxed and reinvigorated afterwards.
They felt different, too: smooth and satin-like. This had an effect on my over-all disposition as well, and I was more than ready for my next treatment.
Pevonia Earth Stone Massage
My first experience of a stone massage in a different spa was less than pleasant and memorable in a bad way, so when I was asked to choose which other treatment I wanted to try, I immediately chose the Pevonia Earth Stone Massage. I wanted to “redeem” the appeal of the massage to me, and really feel its benefits when done correctly.
Pevonia Earth Stone Massage uses Pevonia Botanica’s trademark Sabai oils that have a blend of Malachite Copper and Zincite Zinc.
Malachite Copper detoxifies the body and helps in tissue regeneration. Zincite Zinc is historically used in medicine for physical healing and scar reduction. Together, they bring back harmony in energy flow and balance and reduce stress by activating more than 200 enzymes in the body.-Isobel Etienne
