At the 2015 Red Dot Design Award ceremony held on the evening of June 29 in Essen, Germany, the new cabin design of China Airlines’ new 777-300ER aircraft was named “Best of the Best” in what is widely considered the “Olympics of Design”. The award, received in person by Chairman Huang-hsiang Sun and chief designer Ray Chen, demonstrates China Airlines’ design leadership in the global aviation industry.
Chairman Huang-hsiang Sun said he was proud that China Airlines won the “Best of the Best” award after entering the Red Dot Design Award for the first time. The 777 NexGen airliner is an extension of Taiwan’s cultural diplomacy. As the leading brand in Taiwanese aviation, China Airlines strives to incorporate the soft power of cultural creativity and life aesthetics into its new products and promote the beauty of Taiwanese design through its global network.
This year marked the 60th anniversary of Red Dot. In a unanimous decision by the international panel of judges, the Premium Economy Class Cabin for China Airlines’ NexGen 777-300ER aircraft won the Red Dot “Best of the Best” design award, making China Airlines the first airline to win this award in recent years. The Sky Lounge was also named “winner” of the Red Dot Design Award. The winning NexGen 777 Premium Business Class cabin was praised by Ray Conner, the CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, as “one of the most beautiful designs for the 777” and China Airlines was invited to display the design at the Paris Air Show in June. The Premium Business Class cabin features the aviation industry’s first persimmon wood-grain interior finish. The design, inspired by Asian aesthetics, features dark-blue cloud patterns with muted gold tones, fully-flat seats with ergonomic cushions, and a total length of 78″ (198cm) which rivals that of First Class. The mood lighting and seat-side lamp give the cabin a unique sense of comfort. Other thoughtful touches include multi-purpose storage spaces for personal items, a mini-bar, and USB and power sockets.
China Airlines has also taken the bold step of installing a Sky Lounge that blends the culinary traditions of the West and East. The Sky Lounge not only provides passengers with a place to rest but also a platform for Taiwanese culture. The elite judging panel of Red Dot was very impressed by how these features satisfied the judging criteria in terms of innovation, function, ergonomics, environmental friendliness, symbolism and emotion.
China Airlines’ NexGen design has won numerous awards including the Best Design Award at Golden Pin, the “Distinguished Enterprise Innovation Award” from the Ministry of Economic Affairs’ “National Industry Innovation Award”, the “Taiwan International Creative Design Competition – Distinction”, and the “Taiwan Interior Design Award – Judges’ Special Award” from the Chinese Society of Interior Designers. The design of the 777 Family Couch also received an Outstanding Innovations achievement in the U.S. Global Traveler Leisure and Travel Awards.
The new NexGen 777 aircraft are currently flying on the Los Angeles, New York and Shanghai routes. The Taipei-San Francisco route will be added in July followed by the Taipei-Frankfurt route in November. (2015/06/30)
